Immigration - intercultural dialogue

Immigration - Intercultural Dialogues

Objectives

Empower participants (immigrants and inhabitants of Medellín) in strengthening tools for dialogue, through the recognition of common symbolic elements in the kitchen.

  • Understand the concepts: migration, travel and migrant.

  • Assume new habits focused on promoting dialogue and negotiation in their close environments.

  • Apply the knowledge obtained during the process in an experience of coexistence within the framework of relational art and community practices, reflected in the cookbook blog .

Winning project of the Stimuli for Art and Culture "Medellín City of Artists" of the Secretariat of Citizen Culture and the Museum of Memory House.

Scope

  • 70 participants from more than 10 different countries and regions of Colombia

  • 8 laboratories

  • 1 day of socialization

  • 4 culinary proposals

  • 1 cookbook blog

The Cooking Labs participants explored ways to negotiate and choose a single menu that would satisfy everyone's tastes. The objective was to empower inhabitants of Medellín and immigrants in strengthening tools for dialogue, through the recognition of common symbolic elements in the kitchen.

Background

This proposal is inspired by the work of the artist Adriana Ramírez "Siguientescenas", which invites "to sit down at the table and share with people who have changed their paradigms of life or who have different perspectives on the same subject".

The participants of the Kitchen Laboratories, as in Ramírez's work, explored ways of negotiating and choosing a single menu under the premise we all eat everything and we are all satisfied. The kitchen thus becomes a space for encounter, conflict transformation and intercultural dialogue.
